Most people connect water parks with summer, but there is a place for those wanting to escape the bitter winters in the north. The water parks in Orlando, Florida are open all year long.

Wet’n Wild is 30 acres full of thrill rides, slides, and refreshing water. From September through March they’re open from 10am to 5pm. Aquatica, Sea World’s water park, is located right across the street from Sea World. Their state-of-the-art facility keeps the water a comfortable temperature all year long. Their winter hours are 10am to 5pm, but they are closed February 1-4 and 8-11. Disney’s Blizzard Beach is one of two Disney water parks. Blizzard Beach is home to one of the tallest free-falling water slides. Their winter hours are 10am to 5pm, but they’re closed January 10 through March 20. Disney’s other water park is Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon. This park isn’t open in November and December. They begin their winter season January 20 and are open 10am to 5pm. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon has a children’s area, waterslides, and a place for snorkeling with real sharks.

Orlando’s wonderful weather allows these parks to thrive year-around. The average high in December, January, and February is in the low 70’s and in March the average high is in the upper 70’s. Perfect weather for people who love water parks, but hate the heat of summer!

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. One of the most highly anticipated new attractions in years will be opening at the Universal Orlando Resort’s Islands of Adventure during 2010. Based on the bestselling books by J.K. Rowling, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will be a “park within a park” filled with rides, attractions and foods featured in the books and hit movies.

The Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. Not everyone who comes to Orlando enjoys riding thrill rides, and for them Disney always has something to offer. In 2010 one of the most visually stunning events is the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival from March 3 through May 16th. Visitors can see an array of flowers, botanical displays and educational exhibits throughout the Epcot park.

Give a Day- Get a Disney Day. One of the most highly anticipated events of 2010 is Walt Disney World’s promotion honoring volunteers. If a guest provides proof of volunteering for a day with an approved organization, the Walt Disney resorts will reward them with a one day free admission to the Magic Kingdom park.

Capital One Bowl at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium. For those who prefer the excitement of the gridiron over a theme park, Orlando will be the host of the 64th annual New Year’s Day bowl game at the Citrus Bowl Stadium.

A new look for old favorites. Many of your old favorite rides are getting an updated new look in 2010. At the Magic Kingdom, Cinderella’s Castle is getting a fresh coat of paint, and Space Mountain has been re-tooled with new light and musical effects. Other Orlando parks are using the economic downturn to scale back ambitious new rides and are instead adding new features and upgrades to existing favorites.

If you’re in Pigeon Forge and the weather is a bit too chilly for the outdoors, take in a show.  The Miracle is the world-famous re-telling of the life and times of Jesus Christ, and Magic Beyond Belief is the two-hour magic show from Terry Evanswood; or, for a real down-home good time, check out the Tennessee Shindig Show.

If you want the nature, visit Orlando’s many free nature reserves, such as Black Hammock’s alligator attractions, the Big Tree Park featuring the 3,500-year old Cypress, or the World of Orchids.

In Willamsburg, there’s always the Jamestown Settlement that will get you in the mood as Thanksgiving approaches.  Better yet, drive along the Colonial Parkway to experience both finely-kept history and the rolling hills full of oranges, yellows, and red each autumn.

If you don’t already know, there have been many articles and news posts about threats that are being made against United States citizens traveling in Mexico and the warning is coming directly from the US Department of State. The following is a summary of precautions that the State Department have offered if you are planning to travel to Mexico. 

First, the State Department wants every one to know that although a level of violence has been reported relatively speaking compared to the millions of travelers the number is very low. Second, the advice is to use common sense. During night time hours, just visit well lit, well attended, commercial businesses in the areas you are staying. Yes, this means stay away from the infamous “red light” districts and areas of illegal gambling. I know for many doing so cuts out some of the “rush” you want to enjoy but given the recent events caution is the better part of valor right now. 

Most of the violence against US Citizens has actually been reported near areas that border the US, although caution should be exercised no matter what areas you may be. Last it is advised that if you are traveling to Mexico to be fully aware of where the US Embassy offices are located and have their phone numbers handy at all times.
